Thank you for such a well-researched piece on handwriting! I have pursued the study of graphology for many years as a hobby and have always found it disturbing how so many people are upset by any suggestion that their handwriting might convey something about their health or personality. Yet, every time someone signs their name to anything, they are admitting that their signature is their bond. It can never be perfectly duplicated by anyone else - which is one reason why you have to be careful what you sign. My mother developed parkinson's disease in her late 50s, and one of the first signs was a significant change in her handwriting. This change reflected altered brain chemistry, which in the case of her disease, also affects fine motor control. She complained of this to doctors but it took several years for her to be properly diagnosed despite many additional symptoms that she developed. I have often thought, What if one of the doctors had known that handwriting is brainwriting? A lot of her unnecessary suffering could have been alleviated. Thanks again for such a refreshing perspective!

Hi Aaron!

I'm good! Packing, cleaning, moving---I'm starting in a web design position in Oslo next week. Pretty excited for that! I moved back from Australia at the end of last year.

I haven't really used LESS for any production work yet, and I'm not sure if I will. It's the responsibility for whoever will be touching the code after you that turns me off.. It would be great if they'd pick up on some of this stuff for CSS3, though. Wishful thinking?

Anyway, good to see you're still active!

Hey Asgeir, hows it going? Long time no blog-comment :)

I flirted with both SASS and LESS before eventually settling with SASS. I agree with Jonathon that the SASS syntax is a bit too abstracted from plain old CSS - especially as my preferred style of writing CSS is to bunch everything together on one line - I can't stand scrolling through massive style sheets.

However, the reason I eventually settled with SASS is that I believe the community around it is much more active than LESS. Compass (http://compass-style.org/) is a fantastic tool and I just felt there are more people out there doing more interesting things with SASS, than there are with LESS.

Also, if you get the bleeding-edge version of SASS it introduces a new syntax called SCSS which is much more similar to how the LESS syntax works.

I've never used Expresso Asgeir so, sadly, I can't advise you there.

I did however try SASS before I settled on LESS. I rejected SASS very quickly, mainly because it made me have to think too much when coding my style-sheet. LESS doesn't do that. LESS parses the regular CSS syntax, so adopting it was a no-brainer.

Oh jees.. I left because I was so over people updating nonsense as a status update, it felt like it was chewing my life away after I realised how much time I spent on there. I'm gonna try my best to stay off it. I figure I was living life just fine before Facebook was invented!

Hi Jonathan,

Yeah, I've been playing around with it for a bit, and I'm starting to see the opportunities! In particular, like you mention, the math looks like a win. Things like
<code>width: @grid-stop * 10 - @grid-margin;</code> makes a world of difference.

The only thing is, I'm working with Espresso and the LESS app, and I'm having some trouble. For some reason, the CSS doesn't update in Espresso, even though it auto-compiles (and when I check the file in CSSEdit, it has definitely compiled.)

It doesn't matter too much if I do previewing in a browser, but it completely breaks the built-in preview in Espresso, which sucks.

Have you looked into SASS at all? I do like the fact that they've dropped the brackets, and do all nesting based on indents. Despite the steeper learning curve, it makes a lot of sense!

Thanks for taking the time!
