To Kill a Mockingbird, storyboard, process

Still working on the title sequence for To Kill a Mockingbird. I’m trying to make it easy for myself, because of a severe lack of Flash skills, but I’m still getting stuck. I’m at 25 seconds or so.

SUPAD’OH Photo Shoot

Lars and I just finished our biggest and undeniably dumbest photo shoot yet. Lots and lots of flour, salt, oil and bi-carb soda, and lots and lots of time. Two studio sessions, six hours each, where the majority of the time was spent preparing and swearing, and maybe 30 minutes or so actually shooting the photos.

For this project, we spent ages experimenting with different play dough recipes, to find one that had the properties that we were after. We ended up creating our own, which we named SUPAD’OH (the recipe is after the jump.)

We now have four hundred photos to work through, which will end up in a series of five or six large format posters for an animation festival.

Massive thanks to Courtney Awesome for hair and makeup, and Chris Stonestreet for helping out in the studio when he should be focusing on his own deadlines.

SUPAD’OH Recipe

Ingredients:
4 cups of flour
1 cup of hot water
1/2 cup baking oil
1/8 cup of salt
1/8 cup of baking soda
1/8 cup of baking powder
5ml/1tsp colouring

Mix one cup of flour and the baking powder in a bowl.

Dissolve salt and colouring in the hot water, and add bi-carb soda and oil.

Add the wet mix to the flour, mix well, and add the remaining flour one cup at a time. By the third cup, it’s time to get your hands in there. Add the last one slowly—you might not need all of it.

To Kill a Mockingbird, mood and atmosphere

I’m starting to get the look & feel for my intro sequence for To Kill A Mockingbird. Still not quite sure about the typography, but I am probably going to go with a classic serif, possibly Baskerville.

This is a still frame from the first scene; calm, slow paced, falling leaves, and birds somehow interacting with the typography. The brief requires ten key production and cast members to be presented, and the length is supposed to be 60 seconds, so I will probably present two names at a time to avoid stressed transitions.

I’d also like the tree to grow from nothing at the very beginning, but so far, I don’t really know how. The only solution I have, is to simply mask it all out, and slowly reduce the mask until the whole tree is revealed. This won’t affect the stroke weights, though, and might look awkward.

As you might be able to tell–I’m still at the very basics of Flash.

I’m doing a 60 second title sequence for a fictitious remake of To Kill a Mockingbird, and these spastic bird shaped things will hopefully be part of it.

The flapping of the wings is a simple two-frame movie clip in the library, which is transformed and animated in the main timeline.

Zap! Cola, 3d commercial

The cola commercial (which I’ve mentioned recently) was due this morning, and my endless hours of rendering time were condensed to a 30 second display of glass textured concept-lacking madness. I had only used Cinema 4D once, for a still-frame bottle render, before this, hence the modest detail in the models. Anyway, I’m very happy with how it turned out.

This is a badge for nurses and doctors at the John Hunter Hospital, created to “enhance the awareness of pain as a priority issue.”

The main message of the badge is that if a person is in pain they should let staff know. This allows patients to alert staff of their needs, something which patients often do not easily do. The wording has to be simple and direct [...]”

There are infection control issues that may impact on the design as the badges have to be able to be worn on the chest and need to be able to be wiped clean with alcohol solutions, so must have a flat surface.
